Venice: The Beach

Ocean Waves
Our first dip in the California ocean.
exciting ocean

Venice Beach

The California coast and the Oregon coast are so different in so many ways. First, we would never be prancing in the Oregon coast in shorts or a dress. And second, people would never think to gather for a drum circle because it is so dang windy on the beaches in Oregon! It was a weirdly different and pleasant experience.

We made it

Oh, and then there was the crazy guy that was babying the dead, mangled, greasy seagull he found...

Venice: The Street Art

Street Art
Really cool art and all, but look at that cat!

One of the best parts of visiting a new city is getting to see all the street art. LA had a lot of cool art blasted all over the outside of buildings. All of this is from the Venice board walk. It's amazing how much some colorful painting can brighten up a dull alley way. In my opinion the whole world should be covered in pretty colors.

Venice: The Boardwalk

Tattoos, skating and street art. These were all very common sights we saw on our day spent in Venice walking the boardwalk, and playing on the beach.

After filming Magic Mike, Matthew McConaughey decided to relax and teach surfing.

Though the vendors and cafes have much to offer, most of the fun we had in Venice came from watching all of the interesting people and street acts.

Typical modes of transportation on the boardwalk include roller skating/blading, long boarding, and biking. Though it was more convenient to walk, we obliged with beach cruisers and skates.

We traded these boys an interview for their documentary for a really awkward picture of all of us.

Day: Don't know, but it was really fun.

Outside the theatre when we saw Savages there was a great Katy Perry display, and we finally got to live the dream, if only for a few seconds!
Living in Katy Perry's world, for once!

But really the fun started when we went out to the Santa Monica Promenade with the lovely Lauren and always beautiful Chrissy. We walked around most of the night watching small street acts, and browsing shops open late.
We also ended up getting a free plate of fries at a Greek cafe, and Sienna got a really cute pair of flowered heels. FREE!
But in all reality, the most fun was had taking photos in the bathroom for a solid chunk of the night. What else are girls to do on a traveler's budget?
Snoozin' on the Promenade.

One of our more fashionable nights of the trip, I'd say.

Sometimes...

A girl just needs to try on a pretty dress right out side of her price range. Even if for just one moment of feeling fancy. At least comfort was found knowing that even if we had the money for the dresses we still wouldn't have anywhere important enough to wear them.

Maybe someday we will have a real excuse to be fancy. But for now we are fine with pretending.

day: Four-th of July (continued)

So we ended up getting stuck behind a tree for the fire works show..serious bummer, but not bad enough to put a damper on the night. As we sat and enjoyed the fire works some tunes were sounding from a neighbors ihome. Do you ever have those creepy moments when the perfect song comes on at the perfect time? I always take it as a sign or a good omen when that happens. Almost every song this group played meant something to us, you cant really ask for a better setting to enjoy fire works in if you ask me.

Once the fire works were all over we went to get some frozen yogurt when we heard the resonating sound of a flute echoing from across the parking lot. Naturally we followed the noise and found this homeless looking man standing outside of the grocery store. We were soon to discover he was not indeed homeless and his name was Charlie. He played us a few patriotic tunes before he broke out the big guns and started playing two flutes at once. We were so impressed we asked to get a photo with him. He then took out his cellphone and snapped a photo of us. (This was when we realized he was not homeless, just a little crazy.)

Hope everyone had a happy holiday and ate lots of BBQed goodies.

p.s. The girl on the far right is my friend chrissy who we have been staying with for the past week. Thanks for everything lady.

day: Four-th of July!

Okay so we are a little bit behind...but thats good right? less time on the computer more time for fun and picture taking. We spent our fourth weaving in and out of people trying to make our way across the Santa Monica pier. The day was a bit more overcast then the rest but thankfully it cleared up just in time for fireworks.
A flower within a flower??
One of the best parts of the pier is all the little vendors who have set up camp in hopes of turning their craft into a profit. This man made things from wood. Isn't this wooden bicycle gorgeous?!
Another amazing thing is the street art and decorative buildings. Check out this gorilla and gargoyle infested building. Imagine if they were all to come to life at night. Either super awesome, or totally scary. Im gonna go with awesome.
Can you even imagine how long this would take? geez

back with more fireworks later.

Day: Three

Slowly meandering down the California coastline, we were passing miles and miles of crops laid out in front of the ocean. But never did it occur to us that we would be able to buy any of it! Then we saw this beautiful sign and almost peed our pants. We quickly pulled over, went into the market, and came out with a bounty of fruit!
$17.89
A bag of kiwi, 7 avocados, 1 pineapple, 2 baby watermelon, 7 apricots, 4 grapefruit, 1 cucumber, 2 mangos, a bag of apples, and a box of blackberries and raspberries, all for under $18! We simply could not believe it.

We continued down the Pacific Coast Highway around many frightening bends, but with a spectacular view the entire way down. Luckily the clouds cleared enough for us to enjoy a perfect sunset, while the moon was rising twice as large as we would have expected.
The Earth was great to us on day 3.

Day: Two

We left the flowers from our hair, but we made it to San Francisco! We were overwhelmed with the sites of amazing Victorians and the tall buildings while we ate mustard and turkey sandwiches from the back of the car. I guess you could call that roughing it.
We were careful to avoid all of the steep hills in Sienna's stick shift while we found our way out of the maze that is San Fran, and back to the highway.
